K-band polarimetry of seven high-redshift radio galaxies
We present the results of K-band imaging polarimetry of seven 3CR radio galaxies with 0.7 < z < 1.2. We find strong evidence for polarization in three sources: 3C 22, 3C 41 and 3C 114. Of these, 3C 41 shows strong evidence of having a quasar core whose infrared light is scattered by dust. We also find some evidence for polarization in 3C 54 and in 3C 356. The two pointlike sources (3C 22 and 3C...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملBroad-Band Soft X-ray Polarimetry
We developed an instrument design capable of measuring linear X-ray polarization over a broad-band using conventional spectroscopic optics. A set of multilayer-coated ats reects the dispersed X-rays to the instrument detectors. The intensity variation with position angle is measured to determine three Stokes parameters: I, Q, and U – all as a function of energy. By laterally grading the multila...
متن کاملRevealing AGN by Polarimetry
Polarimetric study in the UV and optical has been one of the keys to reveal the structure and nature of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Combined with the HST’s high spatial resolution, it has directly confirmed the predicted scattering geometry of ∼100 pc scale and accurately located the hidden nuclear position in some nearby active galaxies. Recently, we are using optical spectropolarimetry to r...
متن کاملAGN and Starburst Galaxies Seen through Radio Surveys
The emergence of a new population of radio galaxies at mJy and sub-mJy levels is responsible for the change in the slope of the radio source counts. This population seems to include both star forming galaxies and classical (AGN-powered) radio sources, but the relative importance of the two classes is still debated. We present results from the ATESP radio survey and its optical follow-up and sho...
